“Owen’s Ellaphant,” from CUSTOM MADE MUSIC: TWELVE DUETS FOR PIANO
Originally written for a brother-and-sister team, this duet features a Primo part for the elementary student with an intriguing meter change to explore. The Secondo part is written for the late intermediate student or teacher to play, and has a thumping groove mimicking a dancing elephant. Owen and Ella had a blast learning it! Performed by Belinda and her student, Nina.
Dreamy was composed during a snowy winter in the Canadian Rockies, where the environment outside Belinda’s studio evoked an otherworldly quality. The music similarly does this. Its simple appearance disguises the challenge involved in bringing out the right hand’s hidden melody against the left hand’s changing patterns while maintaining a fluid clear sound.
Belinda discusses and presents music from the CUSTOM MADE MUSIC series, featuring performances by her students. Recorded at San Francisco State University.
